Nordic Left MEPs demand that the EU reject Trump’s “Peace Council”

Left-wing Members of the European Parliament from Sweden, Denmark and Finland are today demanding that the European Commission and the European Council clearly reject U.S. President Donald Trump’s so-called “Peace Council” and urge all Member States not to participate in the body

Donald Trump’s ‘Peace Council’ is a politically motivated project aimed at circumventing international law and undermining established international institutions. The Nordic Left in the European Parliament is therefore making a clear demand to Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa to clearly reject Trump’s initiative and actively urge Member States not to join or otherwise take part”, says Jonas Sjöstedt, MEP from Swedish Vänsterpartiet.

In a formal letter of demands to the European Commission and the European Council, Swedish Vänsterpartiet, together with Danish Enhedslisten and Finnish Vasemmistoliitto, warn that Donald Trump’s “Peace Council” is designed as a parallel forum intended to weaken already established multilateral institutions such as the United Nations (UN), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

The EU has a responsibility to defend international law and multilateral cooperation. Lending legitimacy to politically motivated alternatives that bypass these institutions would seriously damage the EU’s credibility as a global actor”, says Li Andersson, MEP from Finnish Vasemmistoliitto.

The current U.S. administration’s foreign policy does not respect international law and has repeatedly threatened Greenland’s territorial integrity. The EU must stand up for the international legal order and must not contribute to legitimising projects that threaten peace, stability, and internationally recognised institutions.

The threats against Greenland violate international law, the principle of territorial integrity, and the right to self-determination. The EU cannot passively stand by while these fundamental principles are being challenged. On the contrary, the EU must now clearly demonstrate its unwavering support for the UN system and other key international institutions”, says Per Clausen from Danish Enhedslisten.
